VINTAGE RUGBY NEWS....
Questionnaire responses...
Thanks
to all the teams who responded to the invitation to nominate their favoured
destinations for the 2010 and 2012 World Vintage Rugby Carnivals. The
information received from teams and individuals was very enlightening and
will help organisers as they continue the task of identifying suitable
venues for 2010 and beyond.
It was particularly interesting to note the increased popularity of a group
of the high profile European cities. Just a pity that a lot of these venues
don’t have the required rugby infrastructure nor, more importantly, the
required number of grounds together or in close proximity, to host such an
event. Vintage Rugby is now in the process of creating a short list for
further investigation.
The
Boys from Brazil are coming...
Earlier this week Vintage Rugby received the good news that the Keep Walking
Rugby team from Brazil intends to register very soon. They will be the first
Brazil team to play in a Vintage Rugby Carnival.
MEET THE ZF ARQUITECTURA CLASSICS....
We were delighted to recently receive the first entry from Spain. We
asked Guillermo Polavieja the team organiser of the Arquitectura Classics to
tell us more about this well established vet rugby side. He told us ‘ the ZF
Arquitectura Classics started its journey almost five years ago relying
heavily on the club’s previous tradition of sporting excellence dating back
to 1931, when the first Arquitectura Rugby team was formed at the Madrid
Architecture School as an offspring of the cultural boost of the Spanish
second and late Republic.
Since
2003 the Arquitectura Classics have been sponsored by ZF-Marine, an
international firm whose support is deeply recognized among the Classics,
long before they understood what Keine Kompromisse – durch Technik
actually meant (No compromises - by technology).
The Classics are a group of former Arquitectura players, with ages ranging
from 35 to 55, all of them veterans of National Division One and many of the
multi-capped Rugby internationals.
The prototype of a Classic player is a university graduated student, with
current professional practice in Architecture, Engineering or Finance; with
a mentionable (if not remarkable) sports background and a strong bond to
their club and former team mates (just what Vintage Rugby is all about).
All of the Classic players are Club members de número and some
have been or even are among the Board of Club Officials.
For the Classics, as it has always been for Arquitectura, the spirit of true
sportmanship (the spirit of Rugby itself) remains in an uncompromising
passionate approach to the game far beyond where our beaten hearts and
aching legs would normally give up. Surprisingly this approach has given us
many excellent games played in the best spirit and the occasional
outstanding victory, not to mention international recognition in post-match
celebrations !
Since 2001 the Arquitectura Classics have played in London (London Welsh,
Luton University), Paris (INSEAD), Munich (2003, 2004 and 2006 Oktoberfest
Sevens), Lisbon (Carcavelos Beach Rugby), Santander (Sardinero Beach Rugby),
Marbella (Golf & Rugby Classic), Getxo, Seville, Valladolid etc... and
throughout this time we have lent up to seven players to represent Spain in
three editions of the international Bermuda Classic Tournament, widely
recognized as the Rugby World Cup for previous top players who are now
veterans.
The outcome of this adventure has been nothing but sheer enjoyment for our
privileged members and generous sponsors.
For 2008 our main focus, and farthest adventure so far, will be to the
World Vintage Rugby Carnival at Christchurch.”
Organisers
of next year's Vintage Rugby Carnival are very pleased to announce a
significant sponsorship arrangement with Christchurch based DB Breweries
which will result in their flagship brand Tui being the official beer of the
2008 Carnival. Tui's involvement will provide a number of exciting
opportunities for teams playing in Christchurch - for example all members
will receive a Vintage Rugby Bar Passport which will offer a variety of
privileges at selected bars in Christchurch during the 2008 Carnival. We are
also working with the brewery to create a very special rugby night at one of
the high profile rugby bars . . . details will be provided to team leaders
later.
Tui is well known in New Zealand for being associated with good times
(especially among the 'lads') and is New Zealand's most popular beer brand.
Tui is proudly associated with both the Crusaders and Hurricane Super 14
Franchises.
The brewery has launched many excellent promotions none as successful though,
as the advertising campaign which relies heavily on the words 'Yeah Right'.
It caught and kept the imagination of beer drinkers in New Zealand.
The
premise of the 'Yeah Right' campaign is to create a statement that is
topical and front of mind to the average Kiwi. Here are some Vintage Rugby
related examples.
- BREWERY SPONSORSHIP DOES NOT INTEREST
VINTAGE RUGBY PLAYERS - YEAH RIGHT.
- IT'S NOT APPROPRIATE FOR A BREWERY TO
SPONSOR A VINTAGE RUGBY CARNIVAL- YEAH RIGHT.
- I'M NOT HOLDING MY
STOMACH IN - YEAH RIGHT.
- I'M AS FIT AS A 20 YEAR
OLD - YEAH RIGHT.
- I COULD’VE CAUGHT HIM –
YEAH RIGHT
- I THINK WE SHOULD BUDGET
ON 3 BEERS PER PERSON - YEAH RIGHT.
- THINK I'LL HAVE AN
ORANGE JUICE FIRST - YEAH RIGHT.
- I'M ONLY HAVING A BEER
TO BE SOCIABLE - YEAH RIGHT.
- THE BEER'S TOO COLD -
YEAH RIGHT.

Why
CHRISTCHURCH?....
At
the heart of Christchurch is Cathedral Square, a busy pedestrian area well
known for its market days and lunchtime concerts. Nearby, the gently flowing
Avon River meanders through the city offering grassy banks lined with poplar
trees and weeping willows.
Getting around Christchurch is also very simple.
There is relatively little traffic and streets are wide and flat. There
are many other attractions in Christchurch including the Port Hills to
hot air ballooning, shopping to dining, jet-boating to punting on the
Avon River, something for everyone really.
Known in New Zealand as the Garden City, it is
situated on the east coast of the South Island, and is just a one hour
drive from the spectacular Southern Alps which houses many ski fields,
much native fauna and incredible vistas.

To the east lies Banks Peninsula which features sheltered bays, sandy
beaches, bush clad valleys and rocky coastlines. Boating, fishing, many
wineries and French-settled harbour-side village of Akaroa are key
attractions of the peninsula.
A quick journey north reveals rolling hills,
forests and long deserted beaches with the whale-watching centre of
Kaikoura only two hours drive away. Inland is Hanmer Springs, an alpine
resort featuring geothermal outdoor hot pools and 17,000ha of indigenous
foliage.
Throughout the province, there are numerous
attractions and activities too good to miss. For the overseas traveller,
the area is a Mecca of adventure and opportunity so be sure to plan for
a long stay and enjoy the region’s world renowned scenery and
hospitality.
NEW ZEALAND HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER....
The
2008 World Vintage Rugby Carnival provides the unique opportunity to combine
3 games of vet rugby with the ultimate in travel destinations – New Zealand.
For those wishing to explore the wide-open spaces and the outstanding scenic
beauty of New Zealand there are so many different options to consider. From
the majestic World Heritage area of Fiordland in the south west, through
adventure-capital Queenstown, past sweeping lakes and snow-capped ranges,
mountain passes and living glaciers in the Southern Alps, up the rugged West
Coast, and on to Marlborough's famous vineyards and the boating heaven of
the Sounds, the South Island offers wonderful scenery at every turn.
A short hop by air or ferry across Cook Strait takes you to the capital
city, Wellington, a lively centre of arts and culture including the Te Papa
museum, all framed by steep hills and a magnificent natural harbour.
To the north is Auckland the City of Sails, where countless pleasure boats
and yachts ply the sparkling Waitemata Harbour and the warm sheltered waters
of the Hauraki Gulf. On to the tropical Far North, with the endless sweeps
of Ninety Mile Beach to the west contrasting the coves and islets of the
aptly named Bay of Islands to the east.
Hawke's
Bay is another burgeoning wine region with fine dining and tastings at the
vineyards and neighbouring Gisborne is where Captain Cook first stepped
ashore. No trip to the North Island is complete without visiting the thermal
wonderland of Rotorua, where the cultural seat of the earliest Maori
settlers is underscored by hot springs, bubbling mud pools and explosive
geysers.
Yes, New Zealand has something to offer everyone.
