ENTRIES UPDATE & NEWS....
With less than a year before the Carnival kicks off we can announce
that we have now received 36 entries from 15 countries - Tanzania, Bahamas,
Canada, Australia, Morocco, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Thailand,
Switzerland, England, Germany, Argentina, Belgium and Ireland. The five
entries received in the last month were from St Mary’s Falling Stars
(Ireland), Florida’s East Coast Elderly Side (F.E.C.E.S.)(USA), Harlequin
Gentlemen (England), False Bay Vets and Die Mutimanne from South Africa. The
total number of players and supporters is now over 1100. It’s going to be a
real international party !
The world of Vintage Rugby recently featured on the hugely popular Fan 590
Sports Radio programme based in Toronto and hosted by Peter Irvine and
Lindsay O’Connor. Their two-hour International Sports Report programme is
the only targeted radio show of its kind on sports radio in North America
and enjoys almost a cult following from fans of all sports.
Lindsay is a Kiwi now resident in Canada where he represented his province
at Scrum Half. After hanging up his boots, Lindsay became a rugby referee
controlling many matches in New Zealand and Australia. Lindsay is also a
regular guest on Score Television covering international rugby and is the
radio voice of Rugby Canada. He has broadcast numerous internationals
from the UK and North America as part of the International Broadcast Team
for ISR Sports Radio.
Vintage Rugby was delighted that Fan 590 chose to highlight the
Buenos Aires Carnival – check out their website -
www.isr590.com and
read what they said.
So far South Africa is the best represented country with eight confirmed
entries and at least another three in the pipeline.
The Buenos Aires World Vintage Rugby Carnival was recently promoted to 650
participants at the annual tournament for veteran rugby players in Argentina
by the Asociaciones Unidas de Veteranos Argentinos de Rugby (AUVAR – United
Associations of Argentine Veterans of Rugby). It was well received and we
believe we will soon receive many more local entries. In addition we are
receiving indications from teams in Uruguay, Peru, Chile and Brazil that
they will be represented in Buenos Aires next year.
WE WANT TO INTRODUCE ANOTHER TWO OF THE TEAMS COMING
TO BUENOS AIRES …..
To date we have introduced four of the teams coming to Buenos Aires. This
time it’s an opportunity to say ‘Hello’ to the Pacific North West Old Growth
from British Columbia, Canada and Pirates Madalas from Johannesburg, South
Africa.
Team Chairman Steve Braham told Vintage Rugby (‘in case nobody knew’) that
Pirates Madalas stands for ‘Old Men’ – now we all know. The team was
formed by Peter Mumford in 1983 who is the Club President and still plays
for the team – he will be in Buenos Aires for the Carnival next year. Pictured: ‘Pirates Madalas on a recent tour – Peter
Mumford is the player in casual clothes’ Click the photo to see an enlarged
image.
The team has toured Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Namibia and was voted the best team
at the 2004 National Golden Oldies festival in Bloemfontein. The trip to
Buenos Aires will be their first trip outside of Africa.
The 40 strong traveling party is made up of South Africans, English, Scots,
Irish, Welsh, New Zealand and an American player ! Gavin Johnson (member of
the 1995 World Cup winning team) and Peter Winterbottom (Irish and British
Lions and England player) have both toured with the team in the past and
Steve is hopeful they’ll make it to Buenos Aires as well. Let’s hope he also
tells them that Vintage Rugby is all about fun !
Andrew
Gilbert the team leader of the Pacific North West Old Growth tells us
that the team is a traveling side made up from a number of different clubs
in the Pacific North West Over 40 Rugby Football Union – about half of the
side are ‘Snowcaps’ from North Vancouver, and there are 4 or 5 players from
the NOBS out of Seattle plus players from Valley Vintage, Twilighters
(Twits) and one player from Semi Amoo Old Boys (SOB’s). The team plans to
stop off in Santiago, Chile for a game against a local club before hitting
Buenos Aires. Pictured right: ‘Old Growth at the
2005 Santa Catalina festival. The lady on the left is the traveling physio
and the lady on the right is the team’s number one fan and water lady!’
