MEET THE EVERGREENS....
In
this and subsequent newsletters you’ll be introduced to some of the teams coming
to Buenos Aires and read about their history and traditions. First up it’s the
EVERGREENS from Canada. (Pictured

Team tour organizer Roly Witt (he is the player with the beard, 3rd from the
right in the second row from the back) told us that the origins of the Evergreen
Rugby Club date back to the Spring of 1972 when the first Oldstylers Rugby Club
was formed to play the touring Wak Wak rugby team from Japan (who created ‘Over
40’s’ rugby back in 1947). Eventually, as the name ‘Oldstylers’ became
increasingly associated with the brand name of a local beer, a new name was
sought and the club took on the name of ‘Whoi Whoi’ (a tribe of native Indians)
and then through the process of elimination another name change was necessary
and the club became known as the Evergreens in 1979.
The club is one of the oldest over-40 clubs in the world (outside of Japan) with
a membership of 150 and is located at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park, Vancouver,
British Columbia.
The club has travelled extensively – to Japan (5 times since 1974), Argentina
and Chile (twice), Spain and Portugal, the British Isles, Ireland, Australia and
New Zealand – and for the last 30 years participated in an annual game in the
USA.Twelve years ago the Evergreens participated in the first ever Over-60 rugby
game against the Japanese. They are looking forward to their return visit to
Buenos Aires.
Teams from all over the World have played at Brockton - a very special place to
play sport. As the Aussie cricket legend, Sir Don Bradman, commented in his
book, it is “one of the most picturesque pitches in the World with snow capped
mountains and the ocean as its backdrop" – not that the Evergreens play cricket !
ENTER NOW !....
Entry to the 2006 World Vintage Rugby Carnival will be limited to the first 80

REGIONAL FOCUS....
In
this issue we continue our focus on the regions of Argentina.
The series began with an in-depth look at Misiones Province, NE Argentina
and one of the eight wonders of the natural World – Iguazu Falls – if you didn’t
read that article you can
now >>>.
Our
second region is El Calafate and one might well ask what it is that drives
visitors to Argentina to travel 3000km into the vastness of Patagonia –
practically at the bottom of Argentina ?
The answer is quite simple. El Calafate acts as a compelling magnet as the sole
gateway to one of the biggest visitor attractions on our planet – Parque
Nacional ´Los Glaciares´. Nowhere else on earth save for on the Antarctic
continent can you witness such immense glaciers up-close.

MARKETING THE CARNIVAL....
We’ve had good feedback from some teams about our marketing efforts.
Advertisements promoting the Carnival have been placed in strategic veteran
rugby event programmes and rugby publications (e.g. Canada Rugby Post and US Rugby
) with the intention of initially creating awareness for the Buenos Aires
Carnival and to then drive the reader to our website. Sounds simple and it seems
to be working with the website receiving a record number of visits each month.
In June the website received nearly 200,000 hits. Read
