THE GARDEN ROUTE
South Africa's Holiday Playground
Day 1
This morning a late-model rental car which includes unlimited mileage and super-cover insurance will be delivered to your hotel. We suggest you take the R62 scenic highlands route which will take you approximately 5 hours to reach Oudtshoorn, an historic small town which is the centre of the world ostrich industry and renowned for its typical South African hospitality. There are many excellent places to stop en-route including the renowned Ronnie’s Sex Shop. We suggest a late afternoon visit to an ostrich farm outside Oudtshoorn.
Accommodation at a 4-star owner-managed guesthouse on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2
Today we suggest you visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch, famous for its research into endangered animal species. Another very popular destination is the Cango Caves. You should aim to leave Oudtshoorn early afternoon for the drive of approx 1½ hrs to Knysna, voted South Africa’s favourite holiday town. Spread along a huge navigable lagoon, the channel linking the lagoon with the ocean is a dangerous stretch of water known as “The Heads”.
Accommodation for 2 nights at the 3-star Knysna River Club or the 4-star Rex Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 3
Enjoy exploring Knysna, nearby Plettenberg Bay and possibly even the Tsitsikamma Forest region where numerous adventure activities take place including the world’s highest commercial bunjee jump. It is easy to see why this stretch of coast is the most popular part of South Africa’s famous Garden Route.
Day 4
Return your rental at either George (an hour’s drive) or Port Elizabeth airport (just less than 3 hrs drive).
